The State University of New York at Plattsburgh appoints Bright Kontor Osei to a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Art in Painting and Drawing, beginning in Fall 2025.

I recently took the position of Assistant Professor of Art in Painting and Drawing at The State University of New York in Plattsburgh, a full-time tenure-track appointment. Having completed my MFA in Painting and Drawing at Ohio University—where I also taught multiple classes as Instructor of Record and later as an Adjunct Professor—this new role at SUNY Plattsburgh is something I had always looked forward to.

I began this position in Fall 2025, and I am incredibly grateful to have been chosen among many for such a prestigious position of trust. This is a major milestone that sets the tone for my career as a scholar and artist. The pressure will always be there, but as someone who has faced many challenges in life, I see this as the perfect step for me at this point. I have no doubt that I will be of great help to my students, my fellow faculty, and the wider university community. Rather than being daunted by the realities of higher education, I am excited and see a meaningful future ahead in academia—especially within higher education, which is my field.

One thing I am especially looking forward to is expanding my art practice. While I deeply enjoy teaching, I have always seen myself first as an artist, which makes practice and research central to my identity. Since my position includes research responsibilities, I plan to dedicate even more energy to this area than may even be expected of me. I believe teaching and research go hand in hand, and by pursuing my research and artistic practice with seriousness, I know I will bring that energy and growth back into the classroom for the benefit of my students.
